The city of Falun
Discover Falun’s World Heritage – a town shaped by mining, divided by history, and alive with stories from both the fine side and the mine side of the river.
Discover the hidden gem of Falun, a quaint Swedish town that played a pivotal role in shaping world history. With large parts of Falun's inner city classified as World Heritage Sites, Falun invites you to explore its unique heritage.
Through Falun flows the Falun River, dividing the city into two parts - the fine side and the mine side.
On the mine side, the 'roasting smoke' from the mine, darkened the town, killed vegetation, and coloured the houses brown. At Vass Brita's house you can savor this stained and dark atmosphere of the 17th century. Here are also some of the oldest Falun buildings, including the city's smallest miner's cabin where 7 people lived on approximately 10m². Feel free to walk to Falun Mine from central Falun via Elsborg, where the miners lived. Styraregatan is an often-photographed street where the gabled, red-coloured houses give an insight into the character of the district.
On the fine side, the air was easier to breathe. There lived traders, cabin workers and higher officials. You can immerse yourself in 19th-century Thunström's store to imagine what merchants' homes looked like. You can also visit Stora Kopparberg church where Fat-Mats' grave can be found.
Just like a thousand years ago, Falun is full of life. Here people live, shop, explore and meet in the middle of the World Heritage. Explore activities to do, shops to visit and food to taste and enjoy the authentic and vibrant atmosphere of the town.
