The landscape of master miners

Just outside Falun lies a historic landscape shaped by miners and their families—explore gardens, farms, and trails that reflect centuries of life beyond the smoky mining town.

Just outside central Falun, where the air was not as heavily affected by the sulfurous smoke, lies a remarkable landscape shaped by master miners and their families, who built stately homes adorned with beautiful gardens. These miners not only worked at the famed Falun Mine, therefore owning shares, but also tended to their farms, contributing to a rich agricultural lifestyle.

Many of these miners' farms still exist, but most are privately owned. Discover the landscapes and gardens open to the public - Stabergs Master Miners estate, Stora Hyttnäs in Sundborn and Linné's wedding cottage. The gardens at these destinations each reflect different eras and showcase the aesthetic richness created by the miners and their families.

Along the hiking trail of ‘Vattnets väg’ or otherwise called ‘The way of the water to the mine’, you will find several miners' farms in varying conditions, plantations and remnants of cabin sites. At Källslätten and Putbo there are remains of old garden facilities.
