The story of Falun
Falun’s World Heritage tells the story of a place that shaped Sweden, and Europe, for over a thousand years. Through its mine, city, and miners’ estates, Falun reflects a legacy of industrial innovation, social transformation, and cultural resilience.
Discover Falun's rich heritage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells a story of over a thousand years of history. This site includes three remarkable parts - Falun Mine, the city of Falun, and the landscape of the Master Miners. Together, they reflect a legacy of resilience and cultural identity that has helped shape not only Sweden, but also the history of Europe.
In the 17th century, Falun thrived as an international hub of innovation and trade, supplying 70% of Europe’s copper. The city played a key role in driving technological, political, and social progress, laying the foundation for modern industrial society. It was this historical significance that led to Falun being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
Being a World Heritage Site is something we want to share with as many people as possible. The World Heritage of Falun preserves and brings to life a unique chapter of Sweden's history.
