What is a World Heritage SiTE
A World Heritage Site is a remarkable location that showcases the unique intersection of Earth's history and human achievement, making it vital for future generations to preserve.
It is the UN agency UNESCO that designates these places. Throughout the world, there are currently more than 1,000 places and environments on the World Heritage List, of which 15 are in Sweden. World heritage is divided into natural and cultural heritage. Falun is a cultural heritage site.
Other examples of World Heritage are the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge in England, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and Robben Island in South Africa.
In addition, UNESCO maintains a list of threatened sites that require special protection due to conflicts or natural disasters. In Sweden, it is the Swedish state that has ultimate responsibility for the care, preservation and development of world heritage.
